Life is Good in Boston: Keller Williams

I’m a big Life is good fan, not just because of their message (which is painted on canvas in my bedroom) but because they make great products and do good things.

Their philanthropic arm is Life is good Playmakers, out to help kids have the resources and safety just to be able to play. From their site, they say:

“The Playmaker approach to playfulness provides children with opportunities to feel creatively engaged, safe, loved and joyful. This type of transformative play helps children build relationships with the key people in their lives and enables them to build resilience in the face of life’s greatest challenges.”

On Friday, I attended one of their fundraising events, an intimate gathering of probably 50 people in their Newbury Street store (Jake’s House) for a small concert of two sets from Keller Williams. While I hadn’t heard of Keller before I went, I knew the general type of music Life is good picks is always my kind of style, so I knew it had to be a good time. The event had oysters from Island Creek Oysters, beer from Harpoon Brewery, and wine from 90+ cellars– all extremely delicious.

Highlights of the night for me:

  •  Trying my first oyster.

The guys at Island Creek Oysters were the epitome of oyster people (not that I had thought about oyster people very much) and were really nice when I went up to the big oyster bar to say I had never done this before. One of them told me that this was my lucky day- that I was having the champagne of oysters for my first try. Also, he told me to chew the oyster, which I thought wasn’t what you were supposed to do, but I tried it the way he said! The taste was very different from start to finish and I’m glad I tried it. The taste is still a little fishy for me— but you never know unless you try!

  •  Unintentionally meeting John Jacobs

One of the cofounders of Life is good is John Jacobs, and I had been keeping my eye out trying to figure out who the cofounders were much of the night. I didn’t learn this until later, but a guy came up to us and introduced himself as John and asked why we were there. I told him how much I just loved Life is good in general and wanted to support a good cause. I later learned, as he was making an announcement that there would be more burritos coming, that he in fact was John Jacobs, one of the cofounders. I was dumbfounded.

  •  Meeting Boston Tweet

So if you’re in the Boston area, you’ve probably heard of Boston Tweet, the guy behind the Boston Tweet Twitter handle. Kelsey and I sort of recognized him, figured this would be an event he would go to, and decided to see if it was him. A kind of mini-celeb, he was fun to meet and knowledgeable about some places in the area. I’ve been waiting for this place in Coolidge Corner to open up, Hops n Scotch, and he said it was opening next week!

  • On-purpose meeting Bert Jacobs

Luckily while meeting Boston Tweet, I told him that I was really trying to meet Bert Jacobs,  one of the cofounders and a fellow Villanova alum. Apparently Bert was  nearby, and Boston Tweet called him over and introduced me! It was very cool to meet someone I had wanted to meet for quite some time. I guess time to cross that one off the bucket list.

Unfortunately I was too starstruck by the whole thing to take too many pictures, but do know that the whole thing was awesome.

If you’re interested in supporting a great cause like the Playmakers and want to enjoy some great music, come join me for their Life is Good Festival in September. Some of my favorite artists will be there- including Sara Bareilles, Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds and ALO.
