Social Media Day

As you may or may not know, tomorrow is World Social Media Day, brought to you by Mashable and although I don’t have an “in” at the event that Arnold Worldwide is hosting, it will still be a great day to connect outside of the Twitterverse with people I’ve gotten to know through social media.

3 Ways in which Social Media has Changed My Life

1- As a marketing student at Villanova, I realized probably senior year that I could see myself doing something with social media full-time. So, I started to go a little crazy, figuring out the best practices and connecting online and in person to whoever would talk to me about it. Experimenting in the social sphere gave my studies and job search some direction.

2- I’ve also formed a lot of relationships through social media that I wouldn’t have normally. Besides connecting with some of the Boston-area social media experts like David Meerman Scott and Chris Brogan,I’ve become better friends with people through social media. Through my efforts  at school I was able to meet with the face behind Villanova University‘s profiles as well as the VU Career Center. I also have more friends because of it! Twitter wasn’t hugely popular at school until the end of senior year, so those of us at ‘Nova who did tweet became pretty close through it. Once I had tweeted with Anna and Mike, I started saying hi to them in the halls, too.

3- Through social media, I’ve truly learned the greatest marketing/social media principal of all: listening. Marketing and branding is figuring out what people say, feel, and think about your brand and THEN finding ways to make their perception meet your expectations for the brand. You can’t do anything until you understand what customers already think.
