While I know it’s bad to “never say never,” I have to admit that I really hope to never live in New York City. I can imagine myself living most other cities- but New York has just never appealed to me, even with my obsession with You’ve Got Mail.
How come? Let me explain:
1- I hate taxis.
I don’t know why, but I tend to hate taxis. When I take them in Boston, it’s normally as a last resort and I have a habit of getting out early and walking part of the way home. I just don’t like paying a ton of money for somewhere I could get to on public transportation. In New York, everyone takes cabs because the city is so big. Or maybe I just take cabs everywhere because I don’t know how else to get there.
2- It’s expensive, and I’m frugal.
Partly the cab thing, and partly that little thing called living expenses. My friends in NYC pay a lottt of money for rent and have polly-pocket sized apartments. I love my high ceilings, full kitchen and big ole couch. I wouldn’t want to give that up/ pay a lot more money.
3- It’s big. Too big.
While the apartments are small, the city is big. I find it too overwhelming to navigate and can’t keep the neighborhoods straight. I know this would of course come with time, but I just don’t see myself ever fitting in here. When there are too many places to be, I already struggle making a decision.
4- I’m from New England.
I root for the home team, so I can’t find myself making too many friends in NYC at the bar watching games. While most other major cities besides Boston hate all New England fans, I feel the most particular hatred from New York fans (or maybe I just happen to not like them ๐ ).
How do you feel about New York City? Do you want to/already live there? Why or why not?
This is funny because I want to live in Manhattan so bad! I’m from Boston, so I guess I’m used to the city. Yes, I will support the Red Sox until I die, but I feel like there’s so many good things in NYC for me that I can ignore that side of the city ๐
