There has been much discussion, and therefore much nervousness on my part, about getting a job. I’ve enjoyed talking about it in the blogging realm, but it’s one of the questions people always ask me, and therefore on my mind a lot. I hate to admit it, but it keeps me up at night. Although I’m used to not sleeping when I’m busy, the job search really puts me over the edge. So, after a somewhat tearful discussion with Dad, here’s a few steps to get back on track to living like a normal person, but still working towards getting a job.
- Take time for you. Get sleep. Go to the gym. And my personal favorite, have a hobby. Regardless of whether or not you have a job, you still have to be you, and healthy you. Take time to do things that are important to you and you will feel better. Therefore I will sleep in if I can’t fall asleep last night, do exercise videos from OnDemand, and continue blogging!
- Take time off when you get run down. I’m hoping to not apply for any jobs between now and the end of finals. I need a break from having it always on my mind, and I don’t think companies are doing too much hiring between now and Christmas. But, what I can still do, is continue networking. I have a few dinners coming up (go me!) where I can try to have a more open mind about learning from others, and try to figure out how I can help them.
-Perseverance isn’t easy. Then it wouldn’t be perseverance. The job search is going to be frustrating and it’s likely going to take awhile. A lot of marketing positions haven’t been hired for yet- so I can’t be worn out now! I need to take a quick break and be ready to go full speed ahead come January.
- Most importantly, believe in yourself. As Dr. Seuss said, “You have brains in your head, You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” I’m smart, I go to a great school, I’m searching for opportunities, and now of course, I only need luck.
