As part of my semi-professional work in social media, I’ve helped to admin the OFFICIAL Villahova University Class of 2015 Facebook Group. Besides trying to facilitate interaction, it’s a lot about answering silly questions.
Basically my role is to answer any questions about the University so that the incoming students are getting correct answers to them. Examples include how the basketball game lottery works, how do I get a twin XL bed, and how the basketball game lottery works. š
The greatest part about my position is right now- when students have a week or two before they come to campus and students are trying to connect with one another beforehand. I know my class year did it too (we went and looked back at it senior year), and I would do it all over again, but it is just so CUTE. People are posting their orientation groups numbers, their twitter handles, and even the concerts they want to go to in the fall.
Much like I did, people are trying to connect with others who want to try out for the same club sports teams. I remember friending, and messaging back and forth with this girl Peyton from Ohio a few weeks before school started about Club Field Hockey. We didn’t actually meet until the first day of tryouts, and we were already friends.
Now I find myself spending a lot of time checking out the U30Pro group on Facebook, which connects over 400 professionals under 30 trying to have a conversation about issues in the workplace. There are a lot of interesting articles posted, questions asked, and answers given. It’s another great way to connect with people I don’t really know who are interested in the things I do.
Last week, I posted my first question on the u30pro Facebook wall about filling the void after college where all of your organized extracurricular activities used to be, and so far I’ve gotten twelve comments of suggestions and support. You realize quickly that people want to help others, network effectively, and have fun meeting new people.
So whatever stage in your life you’re in, Facebook Groups is a great way to connect with others about your interests.
