I am the first to say that social media has enhanced my ability to form relationships with people in the marketing world that I wouldn’t normally have had access to. With that, I appreciate social media’s ability to share pictures, short messages, and public updates about my life and to keep in touch with others.
But now that I have been fully out of college for a few months, I’m realizing the downfall social media has with serious friendships. Although we’re able to keep in touch with the mundane tasks (e.g. “I locked my keys in my car again.”) and the major successes (e.g. “First day of work!”) I miss the REAL LIFE conversations about relationships, silly moments and what’s next.
Social media has the ability to bring together people who wouldn’t ordinarily speak, but also has the downfall of taking out the need to speak to others you really ought to.
I lived for years with the same group of people and although I didn’t take for granted the ease with which we could speak to one another (Meg and I could even hear each other sneeze through the wall) I haven’t made the proper effort to make sure those conversations happen in real time now.
So I’m sorry, dear friends, but expect an actual PHONE CALL (or a visit if you’re lucky!) from me soon. š
Do you think social media has affected your long-distance friendships? For better or worse?
I couldn’t agree more. Social media is Great to stay connected but it cannot replace the joy of face to face visits with substance.
well written and thought out. i agree 100%. i shared my day yesterday with jeff, bonnie, alanna, aurora, my mom, ken, ann & joe. so easy, simple, fun & memorable.
