Happy 4th of July!

Hope your holiday takes you beyond the computer and somewhere with your family and friends enjoying the sunshine.

The 4th of July brings around my second favorite family tradition, what we affectionately have called Sweat Fest. Each year, we travel to the Berkshires of Massachusetts to Tanglewood to participate in a day of picnicking and playing games in the sun.

Rain or 100-degree sunshine, my family is there either wearing trash bags as ponchos or spraying ourselves with water bottles to stay cool. Although I’m sure some years I wasn’t a huge fan of the tradition, I can proudly say it is one of my favorites.

This year, as it is most years, the wonderful James Taylor is playing.

What’s the other favorite family tradition you ask? Each time we travel to the Outer Banks as a family (as part of a 13 hour drive from Massachusetts to North Carolina) we immediately swim in the ocean, before even going into the house. We trample water and sand in the house right away, and I’ve even lost a pair of glasses in the ocean from it, but I would never stop participating in this family ritual.

I still get to be a kid.
